City Ballot 2009

We need your vote next November.  That may sound odd, but the Library does have the following question on the city ballot:

“Shall the Blairstown Public Library change its board membership to a total of seven (7) board members, consisting of at least five (5) resident members and up to two (2) rural members, with all board members appointed by the mayor with approval of the city council. Said board members shall serve no more than two (2) consecutive terms.  Changes will go into effect December 1, 2009”

The vote, if favorable, will allow rural patrons to be considered for positions on the Library Board.  Many rural residents have served in the past.  However, when the city code underwent codification the wording changed to say only city residents could serve on the Library Board.  We would like to see rural residents be able to serve on the Library Board again.  Many of our rural residents are great library users.  In fact, last year 32 % of our circulation was from rural residents.  In recent years it has been as high as 40 percent.

We urge you to vote “yes” next November  for the change in Library board membership.
