Ebook Challenges

Nooks, Kindles & IPads have come to Blairstown and many of our patron have come to love their e-readers and ebooks.

We are doing our best to provide ebooks for our patrons, but we have major obstacles.

Four big publishers refuse to sell or license ebooks to libraries.  They include Macmillan, Penguin (Harlan Coben's publisher), Simon & Schuster, and Hachette Book Group (authors include David Baldacci, James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks, Karen Kingsbury and many more).  Their concern is about pirating.  While we understand their concern in this digital age, it seems that they aren't look for a solution.  Other publishers issued 300% increases in ebook prices for libraries beginning March 1st.

Publishers are also not allowing libraries to lend ebooks to our open access patron if you don't live in Blaistown or Luzerne or rural Benton county.  So our patrons from Marengo, Van Horne, Belle Plaine, etc. will not be able to sign in to NEIBORS using their Blairstown patron number beginning June 1st.  And yes, that includes Cathy and Beth.  We will have to open accounts in the libraries in the communities we live in.

Ebooks just for Blairstown and Benton County residents.

Begining June 1st, some ebook selections through the NEIBORS website will become available to just Blairstown, Luzerne and Benton County rural residents.  See the above article for the explanation.

NEIBORS is a consortium of 100 libraries offering ebooks to our many patrons.  There can sometimes be long waits for a book.  To help reduce the wait, we have begun buying ebooks that are just for our patrons.  To access these, you must first sign in before browsing.  Then you will see an orange circle by our book selections.
